Chennai to Srinagar is the longest domestic journey on this page, so Tamil Nadu travellers get the most out of 6 nights or more — and many want snow, which means planning around winter.
Chennai to Kashmir is roughly the length of India, and most travellers from Tamil Nadu are coming for one thing they cannot get at home: snow. That shapes both when to go and how long to stay.
Most flights from Chennai connect through Delhi, so day one is largely travel. The train is a two-day-plus journey to Katra followed by the line into the valley — memorable, but only realistic with a long holiday.
For guaranteed snow, come between late December and February: Gulmarg is fully white and the Gondola runs over it. Sonamarg holds snow into spring. Outside winter, the valleys are green and the weather is easier on travellers used to Chennai’s warmth.
Given the journey, we recommend 6 nights. The Vale of Kashmir 6N/7D suits couples; families usually choose the Family Delight Kashmir Tour with a night added.
Chennai (MAA) → Srinagar (SXR), usually one connection via Delhi
Plan for most of day one in transit; an early departure is the only way to arrive with daylight to spare.
Chennai → Katra or Jammu Tawi, then on to Srinagar
Direct long-distance trains from Chennai to Katra take more than two days. From Katra (or Jammu Tawi) the Vande Bharat on the new all-weather line reaches Srinagar in about three hours. Book both legs on IRCTC.
December to February for snow, or April to June and September to October for green valleys and comfortable days.
Kashmir is beautiful all year round. Spring (March–May) is ideal for tulip gardens and blossoming orchards. Summer (June–August) offers lush green valleys perfect for sightseeing. Autumn (September–November) brings stunning golden foliage. Winter (December–February) is magical for snowfall and skiing in Gulmarg.
Indian citizens need a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport or Voter ID). Foreign nationals require a valid passport and Indian visa. Some areas near the border may require special permits — we assist with all documentation for your Kashmir trip.
