Chandigarh to Kashmir tour packages

Chandigarh is close enough to Kashmir that driving is a real option — about 600 km through Jammu. Punjab and Haryana families often combine the road trip with a short 4 or 5 night stay.

Chandigarh to Kashmir is the shortest road journey of any major city in this list — roughly 600 km through Punjab and Jammu. That makes it the one departure where driving yourself, or hiring a car for the whole trip, is a sensible choice rather than an adventure.

Driving from Chandigarh

The usual plan is an early start to Jammu or Patnitop, an overnight stop, and the second day through the Chenani–Nashri and Banihal–Qazigund tunnels into the valley. The Jammu–Srinagar section is the part that closes — for snow in winter and landslides in heavy rain — so build a spare day into any road itinerary.

If you would rather not drive, trains from Chandigarh and Ambala run to Jammu and Katra, and flights connect via Delhi when there is no direct service.

What Chandigarh travellers book

Because the journey is shorter, a 4 night stay works well. The Kashmir 4N/5D circuit covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg; the Budget Kashmir Escape suits friends travelling on a tighter budget. If you are driving your own car, tell us — we will quote hotels and sightseeing without the private vehicle.

How to reach Kashmir from Chandigarh

By road

Chandigarh → Jammu → Srinagar via NH-44, roughly 600 km

A long day and a half, usually broken at Jammu or Patnitop. The Jammu–Srinagar section can close for landslides or snow — keep a buffer day.

By air

Chandigarh (IXC) → Srinagar (SXR), direct or via Delhi

Check for direct services when booking; otherwise connect via Delhi.

By train

Chandigarh or Ambala → Jammu Tawi / Katra, then on to Srinagar

Trains from Chandigarh and nearby Ambala run to Jammu and Katra. From Katra (or Jammu Tawi) the Vande Bharat on the new all-weather line reaches Srinagar in about three hours. Book both legs on IRCTC.

Best time to travel from Chandigarh

April to June and September to October. Avoid driving the Jammu–Srinagar highway in deep winter or peak monsoon unless you have spare days.

Tips for travellers from Chandigarh

  • Leave Chandigarh before 6 am to clear Punjab traffic and reach Jammu with daylight to spare.
  • Check the Jammu–Srinagar highway status the night before you drive — closures are announced by the traffic police.
  • Private vehicles from outside J&K cannot be used for Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari in Pahalgam; local union taxis are mandatory there.
