Shikara boats on Dal Lake, Srinagar
Jewel in the crown of Kashmir

Dal Lake

Houseboats, floating gardens and the hour-long shikara ride that appears in nearly every package we run.

1,583 mWithin Srinagar · 15 km from the airport from Srinagar

Dal Lake is the image every Kashmir trip is sold on, and it is genuinely worth it — provided you go at the right hour and understand what you are booking. It sits inside Srinagar at about 1,583 m, roughly 18 square kilometres of water, floating gardens and houseboat rows below the Zabarwan hills.

Six in the morning, not five in the afternoon

The single most useful thing on this page. Almost every itinerary schedules the shikara for late afternoon, when the water is choppy with traffic and the light is behind you. At 6 am the lake is still, the light is on the Zabarwan range, and the floating vegetable market near Gagribal is actually trading — farmers selling from boat to boat, which is the one thing on the Dal that is not staged for visitors.

Houseboats, honestly

A houseboat night is worth doing once. The carved cedar interiors are real craft and waking up on the water is a different experience from any hotel. Two caveats, though.

  • The gap between a deluxe and a budget houseboat is far wider than the equivalent gap between hotels. Photographs are not a reliable guide — check what is actually being booked.
  • They are colder than hotels in winter and the plumbing is more variable. One night early in the trip works better than the last night, especially in November onwards.
  • Nigeen Lake, next door, is quieter than the Dal and its boats are generally better value if you actually intend to sleep on the water rather than photograph it.
  • Be sceptical of shopping pressure aboard — the "special price today" shawl sale is the part of the Dal experience that most reliably disappoints people.

What it costs

A shikara hour is included in most of our itineraries rather than charged on top — the Kashmir 4N/5D circuit includes it, and the 5N/6D itinerary adds a deluxe houseboat night. Booked independently, agree the rate and the duration before you step into the boat, not after.

One last thing: the Dal is under real ecological pressure from silt, weed and sewage. Take your plastic off the boat with you.

Things to do

What to see in Dal Lake

The shikara hour

The classic circuit past the floating gardens and houseboat rows. Take it at dawn rather than dusk — still water, better light, and the lake doing something real.

The floating vegetable market

Near Gagribal, trading around 5 to 6 am — growers selling produce boat to boat. The most genuinely unusual thing on the lake, and it is over by breakfast.

Houseboats

Carved cedar interiors, moored in rows off the Boulevard and at Nigeen. Worth one night. Quality varies enormously, so book on specifics rather than photographs.

The floating gardens

Rafts of matted weed and soil, anchored and planted with vegetables — a working agricultural system, not a display. Best seen on the same early run as the market.

Char Chinar

A small island planted with four chinar trees, and the standard turning point of a shikara circuit. At its best in the second half of October when the leaves turn.

Nigeen Lake

Connected to the Dal but markedly quieter, with clearer water and less boat traffic. The better choice if the point of the night is sleep rather than the view.

Best time to visit

Mid-September to early November is the best window — calm mornings, the chinars turning around the shoreline, and shoulder-season rates on houseboats that cost twice as much in June. April and May are the other strong option, with the Tulip Garden a few minutes away on the same shore.

Summer is warm and busy. Deep winter is atmospheric — parts of the lake ice at the edges during Chillai Kalan, from 21 December to the end of January — but a houseboat in that period is a cold night, and worth choosing deliberately rather than by accident.

How to reach

Dal Lake is inside Srinagar, about 15 km from Srinagar International Airport (SXR) and a few minutes from most city hotels. The Boulevard runs along its southern shore and is where most shikara ghats and houseboat jetties are.

  • Every itinerary that includes Srinagar includes the Dal — no separate travel arrangements are needed.
  • Houseboats are reached by shikara from the ghat, so pack for a short boat transfer with your luggage.
  • Nigeen is a ten to fifteen minute drive further round and noticeably quieter.
