The Shaliganga river
The fast, white-water stream that gives the valley its name. The rocks along its banks are the classic picnic spot.

Open meadows and pine forest on the Shaliganga river, about 42 km from Srinagar. Quieter than Gulmarg or Pahalgam and an easy day trip — the one travellers now ask for by name.
Doodhpathri is a high meadow in Budgam district, south-west of Srinagar, where the Shaliganga river runs white over the rocks — the name translates as “valley of milk”. Local tradition connects it with the Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, who is said to have drawn milk from the ground here.
What makes it worth a day is what it lacks. There is no Gondola, no row of hotels and none of the crowds of Gulmarg — just open grassland, pine and fir forest, and the river. For travellers on a second trip to Kashmir, or anyone who found Gulmarg busy, it is the day they talk about afterwards.
Leave Srinagar by 8 am. The drive is under two hours, and the best of the meadows is a pony ride or a walk beyond the road head, so arriving early gives you the valley before the day-trippers. Facilities are basic: tea stalls and simple food, a few government huts. Bring what you need.
Doodhpathri is not a standard stop in any of our fixed itineraries, but it replaces a Srinagar sightseeing day easily. Add it to the 4N/5D circuit or any longer package — ask when you enquire.

Rolling grassland beyond the road head, reached on foot or by pony. Pony rates are set by the local union; agree the route before you set off.
Pine and fir forest fringes every meadow. Easy trails, but stay on them — the valley is large and has little signage.
May to October. Summer is green and full of grazing herds; September and October are quieter and golden. Heavy snow from December to March closes the upper road most years — winter visits are possible only as far as the road is cleared.
Kashmir is beautiful all year round. Spring (March–May) is ideal for tulip gardens and blossoming orchards. Summer (June–August) offers lush green valleys perfect for sightseeing. Autumn (September–November) brings stunning golden foliage. Winter (December–February) is magical for snowfall and skiing in Gulmarg.
