Nilnag Lake
A small, still lake in the forest about 4 km from the meadow, reached on foot or by pony. The most popular outing from Yusmarg.

A pine-ringed meadow on the Doodh Ganga, about 47 km from Srinagar, with a pony ride to Nilnag Lake and the Charar-e-Sharief shrine on the way. An easy, uncrowded day trip.
Yusmarg is a meadow in Budgam district set in a bowl of pine and fir, with the Doodh Ganga river running along its edge. The name is usually read as “meadow of Jesus”, from a local tradition that Jesus passed through the valley — one of several such stories in Kashmir.
It suits travellers who want a gentle day: meadow walks, a pony ride through the forest to Nilnag Lake, and lunch by the river. Compared with Gulmarg there is much less infrastructure and far fewer people.
The road from Srinagar passes Charar-e-Sharief, the shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani — Nund Rishi, the 14th and 15th-century saint revered across faiths in Kashmir. It is worth a short stop; dress modestly, and women should carry a head scarf.
Yusmarg is an add-on day rather than a stop in our fixed itineraries. It fits well on a 5 or 6 night trip — for example in place of a second Srinagar day on the 5N/6D with houseboat. Ask when you enquire. For timing across the year, see our best time to visit Kashmir guide.

The river along the meadow’s edge, fast and cold. Good for sitting beside, not for wading.
A higher meadow beyond the main valley, reached by pony or a longer walk. Ask locally about the trail before setting out.
The shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani on the road from Srinagar. A short, worthwhile stop on the way up.
April to October. Spring brings wildflowers and summer is the greenest; October is quiet and clear. The meadow is snowbound in winter, and roads beyond the lower valley may not be cleared.
Kashmir is beautiful all year round. Spring (March–May) is ideal for tulip gardens and blossoming orchards. Summer (June–August) offers lush green valleys perfect for sightseeing. Autumn (September–November) brings stunning golden foliage. Winter (December–February) is magical for snowfall and skiing in Gulmarg.
