The falls
The Vishaw river crashing through the gorge.
A powerful waterfall where the Vishaw river drops about 25 m through a gorge in the Pir Panjal pine forest. The biggest waterfall in Kashmir that you can drive to.
Aharbal is a waterfall on the Vishaw (Veshaw) river in Kulgam district, high in the Pir Panjal foothills. The river, fed by Kounsarnag lake far above, drops roughly 25 metres through a rocky gorge, sending up spray that you can feel from the viewpoints.
Kashmiris call it the Niagara of Kashmir. The setting — dense pine forest and boulders — is as much the attraction as the falls. Paths and railings lead to viewpoints on both sides.
The rocks near the water are wet and slippery and the current is strong; stay behind the railings. The falls are at their most powerful in May and June with snowmelt. Simple food stalls operate in season, and there is a tourist bungalow nearby.
Aharbal is the base for treks to Kungwattan meadow and Kounsarnag lake.

Trails along the river above and below the falls.
May to October; May–June for the strongest flow.
