The meadow
Rolling alpine pasture with herders’ camps.
A wide alpine meadow above Aharbal, reached on foot or by pony, used by Gujjar and Bakarwal herders in summer. The first stage of the trek to Kounsarnag.
Kungwattan is a high, open meadow in the Pir Panjal above Aharbal, surrounded by forest and peaks. In summer it is the grazing ground of nomadic Gujjar and Bakarwal herders, whose seasonal huts and flocks dot the grass.
It is reached by a trail of several hours from Aharbal, on foot or by pony. Most trekkers camp here on the way to Kounsarnag; others come up for a night under the stars without going further.
There are no facilities. Go with a local guide, ponies and camping gear. Weather turns fast in the afternoons.
