Betaab Valley from above: the Lidder river winding through meadows and pine forest
The film valley above Pahalgam

Betaab Valley

A meadow on the Lidder river 15 km above Pahalgam, named after the 1983 film shot here. Reached only by local union taxi, and the easiest of the three Pahalgam valleys.

About 2,400 mAbout 110 km · 15 km from Pahalgam from Srinagar

Betaab Valley is a broad green meadow on the Lidder river, ringed by pine forest and snow peaks, about 15 km above Pahalgam on the road to Chandanwari. Before 1983 it was known locally as Hagan valley; it took its current name from the Hindi film Betaab, shot here, and the name stuck.

It is the most accessible of the three valleys above Pahalgam — flat walking, bridges over the river, and space to picnic — which makes it the one we recommend first for families and older travellers.

The union taxi rule

This is the thing most visitors do not know in advance. Tourist vehicles from Srinagar, including your package car, are not permitted beyond Pahalgam. Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are served only by the Pahalgam taxi union, at fixed rates posted at the stand. It is not optional and it is not included in any operator’s package price — ours included.

The sensible plan is to hire one union taxi for the half day and do all three in a loop: Chandanwari first, Betaab on the way back down, then Aru.

When to go

May to October is the season. From December to March the valley is under snow and the road is often closed beyond Pahalgam. During the annual Amarnath Yatra in July and August, the Chandanwari road carries pilgrim traffic and access to Betaab can be restricted on some days — check with us before planning around it.

Any package with a Pahalgam day — the Kashmir 4N/5D circuit or the 5N/6D with Pahalgam stay, for example — can take in Betaab Valley, with the union taxi paid locally on the day.

What to see in Betaab Valley

Footbridge over the Lidder river below snow peaks, Betaab Valley

The Lidder river meadow

The main valley floor: flat lawns along the river, footbridges and picnic spots. An hour is enough to walk it; half a day if you want to sit.

The film locations

Local guides will point out where scenes from Betaab and later films were shot. Fun for fans; skip it if you are not one.

Chandanwari

Further up the same road, the start of the Amarnath Yatra trek and often under snow well into summer. Combine with Betaab on one union taxi.

Aru Valley

A separate road from Pahalgam, 12 km to a quieter meadow village and the trailhead for Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake treks.

Best time to visit

May to October. June is greenest; late September and October are quietest, with autumn colour and cold clear mornings. Winter brings snow and frequent road closures above Pahalgam.
