Pahalgam is about 90–95 km from Srinagar, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours. A taxi for the day trip costs roughly ₹3,700–4,000 in a sedan or about ₹4,500 in an Innova in 2026. Once you arrive, the three valleys that most people come for (Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari) are reached only by the local union taxi, which costs extra.
That second fact is the one that catches visitors out, so this guide covers both fares in full, along with the route, the stops worth making on the way, and whether to stay the night. We are based in Srinagar and drive this road most days.

The route and the stops worth making
The first half follows the Jammu highway south-east along the Jhelum; at Khanabal, near Anantnag, the road turns up the Lidder valley, and the scenery changes from orchards to pine forest and river. The stops below add an hour or so, and make the drive part of the day:
- Pampore, about 15 km out: the saffron fields, in purple flower for about two weeks from late October, and roadside stalls selling saffron and kahwa. Buy from GI-certified sellers.
- Avantipora: the ruins of two 9th-century temples built by King Avantivarman, right beside the highway.
- The cricket bat workshops around Sangam and Bijbehara, where Kashmir willow is seasoned and cut into bats. Many will show you round.
- Martand Sun Temple, a short detour near Mattan: the 8th-century ruins on a plateau with a view over the whole valley.
- Aishmuqam, a Sufi shrine on a hill above the road as it climbs the Lidder valley.

Some honeymoon packages include this union cab. Six of ours do, including Shades of Kashmir, along with the Aru and Betaab entry fees.
What to see in Pahalgam
Betaab Valley
About 7 km from town on the Chandanwari road: a river meadow ringed by pine forest and snow peaks, named after the 1983 film shot here. It is the most visited of the three and the most photogenic. See the Betaab Valley guide.
Aru Valley
About 12 km up a side valley: wider and quieter, with a village, meadows above it, and the trailheads for the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar–Marsar treks.
Chandanwari
About 16 km from town, the start of the Amarnath Yatra route, with a snow bridge over the stream that lingers into early summer. During the Yatra (roughly July to August), access for other visitors can be restricted.
In town
The Lidder river walk, the small and very old Mamleshwar Temple a short walk across the river, and the Pahalgam golf course. Ponies run on fixed union routes from the town.
Baisaran
The meadow above the town, once the classic pony ride from Pahalgam, was closed to visitors after the attack there in April 2025, and was not among the sites reopened in February 2026. As of our last check it had not been confirmed open. Ask at the union stand or your hotel before planning around it.

A good Pahalgam day trip
- 7:30 Leave Srinagar. Pahalgam is the longest of the classic day trips.
- 8:15 Pampore: saffron and a kahwa.
- 8:45 Avantipora ruins, 20 minutes.
- 10:30 Pahalgam: change to a union taxi.
- 10:45–14:30 Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari, with lunch in Pahalgam or at Aru.
- 15:00 The Lidder in town, then leave by 15:30.
- 18:30 Back in Srinagar.
Day trip or overnight?
Pahalgam is the one day trip from Srinagar where staying the night is clearly better. The drive is the longest, and the valleys are at their best early in the morning and in the evening, when the day traffic from Srinagar has gone. On five days, a day trip is fine. On six or more, sleep in Pahalgam: arrive in the afternoon, walk by the river, and do the valleys first thing the next day.
That is how the 7-day Kashmir itinerary does it, and our Family Delight 6N/7D follows the same plan.
Pahalgam through the year
- December to February: snow in town; Aru and Chandanwari often snowbound, Betaab the likeliest to be reachable. Ask the union stand what is open that day.
- March to May: snowmelt, the river high, the valleys turning green. Chandanwari’s snow bridge at its best.
- June to August: everything open, busiest. The Amarnath Yatra brings traffic controls and crowds in July and August.
- September to November: clear weather, autumn colour, quieter roads, and saffron in flower on the way from late October.
Practical tips
- Leave early. Every hour saved in the morning is an hour in the valleys.
- Carry cash for the union taxi, ponies and entry fees.
- Pack a warm layer; Chandanwari is cold even in summer.
- Check Yatra dates if you travel in July or August.
- Carry ID. There are routine security checkpoints on the road.
