The short answer: a five-day Kashmir trip costs most travellers ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 per person including return flights from Delhi, on a comfortable mid-range plan. Go in a group of four or more and the per-head figure falls, because the car and the rooms are shared. Fly in peak week, book premium hotels or add the full Gondola and pony rides, and it can comfortably double.
The long answer is the rest of this page: every line item a Kashmir trip actually has, what each one costs in 2026–27, and which ones catch people out. We are a tour operator in Srinagar, so the package prices quoted here are our own published ones. The costs outside a package apply whoever you book with.
Kashmir trip cost at a glance
Per person, five days, travelling from Delhi, outside the Christmas and May–June peaks:
- Budget (₹15,000–22,000): 2★ hotels or a guesthouse, a budget private car, one houseboat night, Gondola Phase 1 only, simple meals. The lower end needs a group of four or more to share the car.
- Mid-range (₹22,000–35,000): 3★ hotels with a deluxe houseboat night, a private car throughout, both Gondola phases, a few proper restaurant meals.
- Premium (₹50,000 and up): 4★–5★ hotels or a Gulmarg resort, a luxury houseboat, a premium vehicle, and room in the budget for pashmina and saffron.
Those bands assume flights at a sensible fare. Flights are the most volatile number in the whole trip, so if you are reading this in December with a Christmas departure in mind, read the flights section first.
What decides the cost more than anything else
- Group size. Car and room costs are per vehicle and per room, not per head. A couple pays for a whole sedan; a family of four splits an Innova. This alone moves the per-person cost by 30% or more.
- When you travel. Late December, the May–June school holidays and Diwali week push up flights and hotels. March, early April before the tulips peak, September and November are noticeably cheaper.
- Hotel standard. The gap between a 2★ hotel and a 4★ one in Srinagar is bigger than the gap between a budget and premium car. Houseboats vary even more.
- Where you fly from. Delhi is cheap and frequent. From southern India the fare is often the single biggest line item. See our guide on how to reach Kashmir for the options from each city.
- How many nights you add. Each extra night costs a room and a day of car hire. The days themselves are cheap; it is the overheads that add up.
1. Getting there: flights, train or road
Flights
Srinagar (SXR) has non-stop flights from Delhi throughout the day and direct services from Mumbai and several other cities. Fares move daily, so treat the following as typical bands rather than quotes:
- Delhi–Srinagar one way: often ₹4,000–7,000 when booked a few weeks out in a quiet month; ₹10,000–15,000 or more around Christmas, New Year and the start of the summer holidays.
- From Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Kolkata: roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the Delhi fare, and sometimes less to fly via Delhi than direct.
- Return trip for two from Delhi: budget ₹16,000–28,000 in an ordinary month.
Book flights before anything else, and before the hotels. A Srinagar hotel rarely doubles in price; a flight easily can. Our departure-city pages for Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru cover which route makes sense from each.
Train
The all-weather rail line into the valley is now running. Vande Bharat services link Jammu Tawi and Katra with Srinagar, and AC chair car fares from Katra to Srinagar have been around ₹700–900 (executive class roughly double). Add your fare to Katra or Jammu, for example the Delhi–Katra Vande Bharat. It is the cheaper way in for families and a good one if you are combining Vaishno Devi with Kashmir. It costs you more time than flying, though: about a day each way from Delhi.
Road
Driving in on NH-44 from Jammu (about 270 km) is cheap in fuel but costs a full day each way and can be closed by landslides or snow. A one-way taxi from Jammu to Srinagar is a significant cost on its own, so this route usually makes sense only for people already in Jammu or driving their own car.
2. Hotels and houseboats
Per room per night, for two people, in an ordinary month:
- Budget hotel or guesthouse (2★): ₹1,500–3,000.
- Mid-range hotel (3★): ₹3,000–6,000, usually with breakfast and dinner on a MAP plan.
- Upper-mid and 4★: ₹6,000–12,000.
- Gulmarg and Pahalgam resorts: noticeably more than Srinagar for the same standard, and much more in the snow season.
- Houseboats: from about ₹3,000 for a basic boat to ₹6,000–10,000 for a deluxe one, and well beyond that for the heritage luxury boats.
Two decisions save more money than haggling. Stay in Srinagar and do Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam as day trips, rather than paying resort prices in each. And book a single houseboat night, not three: one night on the water is the experience, and the extra nights rarely add much.

3. Getting around the valley
App cabs are effectively absent in Kashmir. You either hire a private car with a driver for the trip, or take taxis point to point at union rates. For most visitors, a private car for the whole trip is cheaper and much less hassle.
- Private car for the trip: this is where a package earns its price. In our packages it covers the car, driver, fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s allowance for every day of the itinerary.
- Day taxi from Srinagar: a sedan to Gulmarg, Sonamarg or Pahalgam and back costs a few thousand rupees per day, more for Pahalgam because of the distance.
- Pahalgam union taxis: your own car cannot drive on to Aru, Betaab Valley or Chandanwari. The local union runs those roads at fixed rates. The April 2026 tariff ran from about ₹900–1,600 for Betaab alone to ₹2,100–3,000 for all three points, depending on the vehicle.
- Sonamarg and Gulmarg: the same principle applies to ponies and local vehicles at the upper points. Expect fixed rate cards, not open negotiation.
4. Activities and entry fees
This is the section that turns a ₹25,000 budget into a ₹32,000 trip if nobody warned you:
- Gulmarg Gondola: fares in 2026 have been around ₹800 for Phase 1 and ₹1,000 for Phase 2, so about ₹1,800 per person for both. Book only on the official cable car corporation portal, and check the current fare there, because it is revised periodically.
- Shikara ride on Dal Lake: fares are fixed by the Tourism Department, at roughly ₹700–800 per boat per hour (up to four people). Many packages, ours included, include one hour.
- Pony rides: from several hundred rupees per person for a short ride to around ₹1,500 for the return ride to Thajiwas Glacier at Sonamarg. Rates are fixed by the local unions.
- Snow gear at Gulmarg: coat and boots hire costs a few hundred rupees per person per day in winter. It is worth it.
- Mughal gardens and monuments: small entry fees, a few tens of rupees each. The Tulip Garden in season charges more.
- Skiing: lessons and equipment hire at Gulmarg are a separate budget entirely, from a few thousand rupees a day upwards.
For a family of four, the Gondola alone is ₹7,200 for both phases, and a day of Pahalgam union taxis and ponies can add as much again. Price these before you go. If an operator’s quote does not say whether they are included, ask.
5. Food
- Breakfast and dinner are usually included in a hotel MAP plan, and therefore in most packages.
- Lunch on the road: ₹250–500 per person at a dhaba or a simple restaurant at Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg.
- A proper restaurant meal in Srinagar: ₹600–1,200 per person.
- Wazwan: worth one meal of your trip. A restaurant wazwan for two costs roughly what a good dinner would in a big Indian city.
- Kahwa, noon chai and bakery stops: cheap, and among the best things you will eat.
6. Shopping and extras
Shopping is the line item with no ceiling. A genuine GI-labelled pashmina shawl costs thousands, not hundreds, and a cheap "pashmina" is not one. Kashmiri saffron, dry fruits, walnut wood and papier-mâché are the other common buys. Decide a figure before you arrive, and do not let a shopping stop your driver suggests decide it for you.
Leave a small buffer for tips (drivers, shikara boatmen, houseboat staff), travel insurance, and a day lost to weather.
Sample budgets: three real trips
A couple, 5 days, budget
- Ground package: Budget Kashmir Escape, 4N/5D, ₹21,500 for two (2★ hotels, one houseboat night, private sedan, shikara hour, breakfast and dinner).
- Return flights from Delhi in a quiet month: about ₹20,000 for two.
- Gondola Phase 1 for two: about ₹1,600.
- Pahalgam union taxi to Betaab: about ₹1,000–1,600.
- Lunches, kahwa and small extras: about ₹5,000.
- Total: about ₹50,000 for two, or ₹25,000 per person.
A family of four, 7 days, mid-range
- Ground package: Family Delight, 6N/7D, ₹56,400 for four in an Innova, with a Pahalgam night and a houseboat night.
- Return flights from Delhi: about ₹40,000 for four.
- Gondola, both phases, for four: about ₹7,200.
- Pahalgam union taxi (Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari) and a pony ride: about ₹5,000.
- Lunches, snow gear and extras: about ₹10,000.
- Total: about ₹1,18,600, or ₹29,650 per person.
A group of eight friends, 5 days
- Ground package: Kashmir 4N/5D, the full valley circuit, ₹70,500 for eight in a Tempo Traveller.
- Return flights from Delhi: about ₹80,000 for eight.
- Gondola Phase 1 for eight: about ₹6,400.
- Extras and food: about ₹16,000.
- Total: about ₹1,73,000, or roughly ₹21,600 per person. The ground cost here is under ₹9,000 a head.
Look at the pattern: in all three trips, the flights and the extras cost as much as the ground package itself. This is why "Kashmir package from ₹7,999" headlines rarely match what people actually spend.
How the season changes the cost
- December to February (snow): Gulmarg hotels and flights peak around Christmas and New Year. January and February outside holiday weeks are better value, and the snow is more reliable anyway.
- March to April (spring): the Tulip Garden opens around late March, and prices climb towards the April peak. Early March is one of the quietest, cheapest times.
- May to June (summer peak): the most expensive time overall. School holidays, full hotels and the Gondola selling out days ahead.
- July to August: moderate prices, but the Amarnath Yatra affects roads and availability around Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
- September to November (autumn): good value, excellent weather, the chinar colour in late October and November. Diwali week is the exception.
The month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Kashmir covers what each month is like on the ground, not just what it costs.
Ways to spend less without having a worse trip
- Travel as four, not two. An Innova split four ways costs less per head than a sedan for two.
- Base in Srinagar. Day trips to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam avoid three sets of resort prices.
- Go in shoulder season. Early March, September or November, avoiding festival weeks.
- Book flights early, everything else second.
- Do Gondola Phase 1 only if the weather or budget is tight. The view from Kongdori is already spectacular; Phase 2 is weather-dependent and often closed by wind.
- Agree pony and union rates by the card, not by the conversation.
- Skip the commission shopping stops. Buy pashmina and saffron from GI-certified sellers, once, deliberately.

- Gondola tickets, and which phase.
- Pahalgam union taxi to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari.
