The snowfield
Snow play and activities for most of the year.
A snow point just across the Zojila pass from Sonamarg, on the Ladakh side, where snow lies for most of the year. Reached by local taxi from Sonamarg when the pass is open.
Zero Point is a broad snowfield a short distance beyond the Zojila pass, on the road from Sonamarg to Drass and Kargil. Technically it lies in Ladakh, but it is visited as a day trip from Sonamarg. Snow lies here for most of the year, which is why it has become one of the most popular snow stops in the region.
The road over Zojila is narrow, unpaved in places, and climbs steeply with sheer drops. On top you find snow activities — sledging, ATV rides, snow scooters — and tea stalls in season.
Tourist vehicles from Srinagar usually stop at Sonamarg; the trip to Zero Point is made in local taxis at fixed rates, not included in packages. The pass is closed in winter and opening dates vary. Altitude here is around 3,500 m — move slowly and keep warm.

Sonamarg is about 80 km from Srinagar, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours up the Sindh valley via Ganderbal, Kangan and Gund. The last stretch passes through the Z-Morh tunnel.
Yes. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, the road from Srinagar to Sonamarg stays open in winter, apart from short closures after heavy snow or avalanche warnings. Zero Point and the Zojila pass beyond Sonamarg remain closed in winter.
The main routes to Gulmarg, Sonamarg (through the Z-Morh tunnel) and Pahalgam are kept open, but heavy snow can close any of them for a few hours or a day, and Srinagar flights are sometimes delayed by snow. Gurez, Zero Point, Sinthan Top and the Mughal Road are closed all winter. Keep a spare day.
