Thajiwas is a glacier at the head of a side valley above Sonamarg, ringed by peaks. Below the ice, snowfields lie in the gullies well into summer, and they are what most visitors come for: sledging, snowball fights and photographs in June.
The route from Sonamarg crosses meadows and a stream and climbs gently through the valley. The ponies, sledge pullers and guides are organised in local unions, and rates are posted — agree everything before you start.
Planning
Allow three to four hours. Go in the morning; by afternoon the snow softens and clouds build. Waterproof shoes help. If your package includes Sonamarg, this is usually how you spend the day.

Sonamarg is about 80 km from Srinagar, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours up the Sindh valley via Ganderbal, Kangan and Gund. The last stretch passes through the Z-Morh tunnel.
Yes. Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened in January 2025, the road from Srinagar to Sonamarg stays open in winter, apart from short closures after heavy snow or avalanche warnings. Zero Point and the Zojila pass beyond Sonamarg remain closed in winter.
