The temple ruins
Stone Shiva temples in a riverside setting.
A village in the Wangath valley with the ruins of an 8th-century Shiva temple complex — and the starting point of the trek to Gangabal Lake.
Naranag lies at the end of the road up the Wangath valley, off the Srinagar–Sonamarg highway at Kangan. In the village stand the ruins of two groups of stone temples dedicated to Shiva, generally dated to the 8th century, among the finest early temple remains in Kashmir.
The village is also the trailhead for Gangabal Lake. Many trekkers spend a night here before the steep climb begins.
The temples take half an hour. The drive up the Wangath valley is beautiful in its own right. Combine with a stop at Kheer Bhawani on the way.
