The Baltal valley
Riverside flats below the Zojila, with views to the peaks.
A valley floor about 15 km from Sonamarg that becomes the main base camp for the shorter route to the Amarnath cave every summer. Helicopter services start nearby.
Baltal is a flat stretch of valley at the foot of the Zojila pass, about 15 km from Sonamarg. For most of the year it is quiet. During the Amarnath Yatra — usually July and August — it becomes a huge tented camp and the start of the shorter northern route to the cave, about 14 km on foot.
Helicopter services run from Baltal towards Panjtarni during the Yatra for pilgrims who cannot walk. Ponies and palanquins are also available at regulated rates.
Pilgrims must register in advance, carry the official Yatra permit and a compulsory health certificate, and follow the RFID card system. We can arrange Sonamarg stays and transport around your Yatra dates.
