The snow bridge
Packed avalanche snow over the stream, usually into early summer.
The road head 16 km above Pahalgam where the Amarnath Yatra trek begins. Snow often lingers here well into summer, with a famous snow bridge over the stream.
Chandanwari is the end of the road above Pahalgam, 16 km up the valley of the Sheshnag stream. It is the starting point of the traditional Amarnath Yatra route, which climbs from here past Pissu Top and Sheshnag lake to the cave shrine.
For day visitors the attraction is snow. Avalanche snow often bridges the stream here until June or later, and in May the snowfields come right down to the road. It is the easiest place near Pahalgam to stand on snow in late spring.
Tourist vehicles from Srinagar, including your package car, are not allowed beyond Pahalgam. Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are served only by the Pahalgam taxi union at fixed, posted rates, paid locally — not included in any operator’s package price, ours included.
During the Yatra — usually July and August — Chandanwari becomes a busy pilgrim camp and access for regular tourists can be restricted. Combine it with Betaab Valley, which is on the same road.

No. Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are served only by the Pahalgam taxi union, so you change to a union vehicle at the Pahalgam stand. Rates are fixed by the union card; the April 2026 tariff ranged from about ₹900 for Betaab in a small car to ₹3,000 for all three points in an Innova.
On a five-day trip, a day trip from Srinagar is more efficient: about 2.5 hours each way, with no hotel change. On six nights or more, one night in Pahalgam is worth it, because you see Betaab Valley and Aru early, before the day visitors arrive.
Kashmir is beautiful all year round. Spring (March–May) is ideal for tulip gardens and blossoming orchards. Summer (June–August) offers lush green valleys perfect for sightseeing. Autumn (September–November) brings stunning golden foliage. Winter (December–February) is magical for snowfall and skiing in Gulmarg.
