The octagonal tank
Mughal arcades around the deep blue spring.
A deep blue spring in an octagonal stone tank built by Jahangir in 1620, traditionally the source of the Jhelum. Jahangir loved it so much he asked to be buried here.
Verinag lies at the southern end of the Kashmir valley, at the foot of the Banihal range. A spring rises here into a deep, intensely blue pool, traditionally regarded as the source of the Jhelum.
In 1620 Emperor Jahangir enclosed it in an octagonal stone tank surrounded by arched cells; his son Shah Jahan added a garden and canal. Jahangir loved the spot so much that he is said to have wished to be buried here. Large trout swim in the clear water.
Verinag is the farthest of the south Kashmir spring gardens from Srinagar. A comfortable day trip combines it with Kokernag and Achabal. Allow 45 minutes here.
