The cascades
Spring water rushing down stone chutes from the hillside.
A Mughal garden built around a powerful spring at the foot of a forested hill near Anantnag, laid out by Nur Jahan around 1620. Cascades, fountains and shade.
Achabal is one of the oldest Mughal gardens in Kashmir, laid out around 1620 and associated with Empress Nur Jahan. A strong spring rises from the foot of the hillside and is channelled down the garden in cascades, pools and fountains.
It is less visited than the Srinagar gardens and, many feel, more beautiful: the water is louder, the setting greener, and the chinar shade deeper. Families from Anantnag come here for picnics on summer weekends.
Allow 45 minutes. Achabal combines naturally with Martand, Kokernag and Verinag on a south Kashmir day.

April to October; autumn for chinar colour.
