The Aru meadow
Open grassland with the river running through it. Pony rides and walks of an hour or two.
A meadow village 12 km above Pahalgam on the Lidder’s eastern branch, surrounded by fir forest and snow peaks. Quieter than Betaab and the trailhead for Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake.
Aru is a small village at the head of a wide green meadow, 12 km from Pahalgam up the eastern branch of the Lidder river. Fir forest climbs the slopes on both sides and snow peaks close off the valley. Shepherd families bring their flocks up here in summer.
It is the quietest of the three side valleys reached from Pahalgam, and the one with the most to do on foot. Day visitors walk or ride ponies across the meadow and along the river. Trekkers start from here for Kolahoi Glacier and the Tarsar–Marsar lakes, two of the finest treks in Kashmir.
Tourist vehicles from Srinagar, including your package car, are not allowed beyond Pahalgam. Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are served only by the Pahalgam taxi union at fixed, posted rates, paid locally — not included in any operator’s package price, ours included.
The usual plan is one union taxi for the half day: Chandanwari and Betaab Valley on one road, Aru on the other. A few simple guesthouses and camps in Aru let you stay overnight — worth it if you want the meadow to yourself in the early morning.
Open grassland with the river running through it. Pony rides and walks of an hour or two.
A multi-day trek via Lidderwat to the foot of Kolahoi, the highest peak in the area.
Alpine lakes over several days, among the most beautiful treks in the Himalaya.
May to October. June to August is greenest; late September and October bring clear skies and autumn colour. Snow and road closures in winter.

Srinagar · Gulmarg · Sonamarg · Pahalgam · Dal Lake
Adds a night in Pahalgam and a night aboard a deluxe Dal Lake houseboat to the classic valley circuit.
Srinagar · Gulmarg · Sonamarg · Pahalgam
Deluxe houseboat, shikara ride, candlelight dinner and cake across the four main valley stops.
No. Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are served only by the Pahalgam taxi union, so you change to a union vehicle at the Pahalgam stand. Rates are fixed by the union card; the April 2026 tariff ranged from about ₹900 for Betaab in a small car to ₹3,000 for all three points in an Innova.
On a five-day trip, a day trip from Srinagar is more efficient: about 2.5 hours each way, with no hotel change. On six nights or more, one night in Pahalgam is worth it, because you see Betaab Valley and Aru early, before the day visitors arrive.
Pahalgam is about 90–95 km from Srinagar, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours along the Jammu highway to Anantnag and then up the Lidder valley. Stops at the Pampore saffron fields and Avantipora add time.
