The lake
Deep blue-green water under the peaks, often with ice into July.
A glacial lake at around 3,600 m on the trek from Chandanwari to Amarnath, named for the serpent Sheshnag of Hindu mythology. Reached only on foot or by pony.
Sheshnag is a turquoise glacial lake below a ring of snow peaks on the traditional Amarnath route. In Hindu tradition, Shiva left the serpent Sheshnag here on his way to the cave, and the lake is a sacred halt for pilgrims.
The lake is about 11 km on foot from Chandanwari, over the steep Pissu Top climb. Most pilgrims camp at Sheshnag on the first night of the Yatra. Outside Yatra season, it is a trekking destination for experienced walkers.
During the Yatra (usually July–August) you must register officially and carry a Yatra permit and medical certificate. Outside that window, trekking requires local arrangements and a guide; weather at this altitude changes quickly. This is not a casual day trip — plan a full day each way or camp.
