The springs and garden

A garden town built around Kashmir’s largest freshwater springs, with a botanical garden, rest houses and a big trout farm. Cool, green and quiet.
Kokernag is a small town at the foot of forested hills in the Bringi valley, south-east of Anantnag. Its springs are among the largest in Kashmir. The name is usually explained by the springs emerging in several branches, like the claws of a hen — koker in Kashmiri.
The springs feed a botanical garden with lawns, flower beds and footbridges, and one of the largest trout farms in the region, where you can see the hatchery and buy fresh fish. The water is cold and clear, and is reputed to have medicinal properties.
It is a gentle, family-friendly place, good for a night away from the main circuit. Government tourist bungalows sit inside the garden. From here the road continues to Daksum and Sinthan Top.
