The temple
A compact stone shrine with a pyramidal roof.
The Mamleshwar temple, a small stone Shiva shrine on the bank of the Lidder about 1 km from Pahalgam. Generally dated to the 12th century, and still in worship.
The Mamleshwar or Mamal temple stands across the Lidder from Pahalgam town, a short walk over the bridge. It is a small square stone temple dedicated to Shiva, with a lingam inside and a spring-fed tank in front.
Archaeologists generally date it to the 12th century; local tradition makes it much older and connects it with the legend of Ganesha guarding Parvati’s door. It remains an active place of worship and is one of the oldest standing temples in the region.
Allow 30–45 minutes, including the walk. It is a calm place in the early morning and an easy add-on to a Pahalgam evening.
