The lake
Deep blue water in a wide alpine meadow.
A high alpine lake at about 3,700 m on the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, below Kishansar and famous for its brown trout. Reached only on foot.
Vishansar is the first of the big lakes on the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, reached from Sonamarg over the Nichnai pass. It lies in a broad meadow below snow peaks, and its water is home to brown trout.
Trekkers usually camp beside it and climb to Kishansar, its twin, the next morning before crossing the Gadsar pass.
The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is a high-altitude route of about a week, crossing passes above 4,000 m. It needs fitness, a registered operator with guides and ponies, and full camping gear. Check registration and permission rules at the time of booking — they change from season to season.
