Five days covers the Kashmir valley comfortably: one day in Srinagar and one day each for Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, with the fifth day for your flight home. A shorter trip means dropping one of the three meadows.

The short answer

Base yourself in Srinagar for all four nights and travel out to a different destination each day. You unpack once. The alternative, moving hotels to Gulmarg or Pahalgam, costs you half a day in check-ins and luggage, which is expensive on a trip this short.

The five-day plan, day by day

Day 1 - Arrive in Srinagar, Mughal Gardens and Dal Lake

Land at Srinagar airport and check in. The afternoon covers the Mughal Gardens, Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, plus Chashme Shahi and Shankaracharya Temple, finishing with an hour on Dal Lake by shikara. Night in Srinagar.

Day 2 - Gulmarg

A full day out at Gulmarg for the meadows and mountain views, returning to Srinagar the same evening. The Gondola is the reason most people come here, and it is the single biggest thing to budget for separately.

Day 3 - Sonamarg

Sonamarg, the meadow of gold, is the glacier day. Thajiwas Glacier sits a pony ride from the road head. Back to Srinagar in the evening.

Day 4 - Pahalgam

Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, along the Lidder river. Pony rides and local union vehicle charges apply here and are not included in the package price. Back to Srinagar for the last night.

Day 5 - Departure

Breakfast, check out, and transfer to Srinagar airport.

What five days actually costs

Our 4N/5D package is priced as a total for the group, not per person, so the cost per head falls sharply as the group grows:

That covers four nights of accommodation, breakfast and dinner daily, a private vehicle for the whole tour, all transfers and sightseeing, tolls, parking, driver allowance and GST.

What to budget for on top

These are genuinely not included, and they are the costs that surprise people:

  • Flights to and from Srinagar
  • The Gulmarg Gondola, both Phase 1 and Phase 2
  • Pony rides and local union vehicle charges at Pahalgam and Sonamarg
  • Entry fees at monuments and sightseeing points
  • Lunches, personal expenses and travel insurance

Who this itinerary suits

It works well for a first visit to Kashmir, for couples, and for families who want the headline sights without a punishing schedule. It suits you less if you want to trek, if you specifically want a houseboat night, or if you would rather spend three unhurried days in one place than four busy ones across the valley. In those cases a 5N/6D or 6N/7D itinerary is the better starting point.

A few practical notes

  • Hotel check-in is 12:00 PM and check-out is 11:00 AM.
  • Vehicle air conditioning does not work in the hill sections, which is normal on these roads.
  • The order of days can shift with weather; the destinations stay the same.
  • The itinerary can be reshaped around your dates, and often is.
