The peak from Dawar
Best at sunrise and sunset.
A pyramid-shaped mountain above Dawar in the Gurez valley, named after the 16th-century Kashmiri poetess Habba Khatoon. The defining view of Gurez.
Habba Khatoon peak rises above Dawar, the main village of the Gurez valley, in an almost perfect pyramid. It is the image everyone takes home from Gurez — reflected in the Kishanganga river, glowing at sunset, white in early summer.
Habba Khatoon was a 16th-century poetess and queen, wife of Yusuf Shah Chak, the last independent ruler of Kashmir. After he was taken away by the Mughal emperor Akbar, she is said to have wandered the hills singing songs of longing. Legend says she came to Gurez, and the peak bears her name. A spring at its base is named after her too.
The peak is seen best from Dawar and the riverbank. Plan at least two nights in Gurez — the drive over Razdan Pass is long.
Best at sunrise and sunset.
At the foot of the mountain.
June to September.
Srinagar · Gulmarg · Sonamarg · Pahalgam
The complete valley circuit with deluxe stays on MAP plan, a private vehicle throughout and an hour on Dal Lake by shikara.
Srinagar · Gulmarg · Sonamarg · Pahalgam · Dal Lake
Adds a night in Pahalgam and a night aboard a deluxe Dal Lake houseboat to the classic valley circuit.
Srinagar · Gulmarg · Sonamarg · Pahalgam
Deluxe houseboat, shikara ride, candlelight dinner and cake across the four main valley stops.
Only between roughly June and September, and only by giving it two days, because the road over the Razdan Pass is long and Gurez is a border area that needs a permit and an overnight stay. On a seven-day trip that means dropping one of Sonamarg or Pahalgam.
Indian citizens need a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport or Voter ID). Foreign nationals require a valid passport and Indian visa. Some areas near the border may require special permits — we assist with all documentation for your Kashmir trip.
Close to Srinagar: Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Manasbal Lake and the Naranag temples. In the south: Kokernag, Verinag, Aharbal and Daksum. In the north, in summer only: Gurez, Bangus and the Lolab Valley.
