Boating
Local boats from the lakeshore villages.
A vast lake fed by the Jhelum in north Kashmir, with fishing villages, water chestnut harvests and Zain-ul-Abidin’s island. A Ramsar wetland and a world away from Dal.
Wular is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, lying between Bandipora and Sopore in north Kashmir. The Jhelum flows into it and out again, and its size changes with the seasons. It is a Ramsar wetland of international importance.
Unlike Dal, Wular is a working lake: fishermen in long boats, villages on the shore, and an autumn harvest of water chestnuts. In the middle lies Zainul Lank, an artificial island built by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin in the 15th century.
Boating is available from points along the shore; afternoons can turn windy and rough, so go in the morning or evening. For the view, climb to Watlab. Combine with Manasbal on the way back.
