The shrine
Baba Shukur-ud-Din’s shrine on the hilltop.
A hilltop above Wular Lake crowned by the shrine of Sufi saint Baba Shukur-ud-Din, with the finest view of Asia’s largest freshwater lake.
Watlab is a village on the western shore of Wular Lake. Above it, on a hilltop reached by a steep road and steps, stands the shrine of Baba Shukur-ud-Din, a disciple of Kashmir’s patron saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani.
The view from the shrine takes in the full sweep of Wular, the mountains of Bandipora beyond, and on clear days Haramukh. At sunset it is extraordinary.
Dress modestly at the shrine. There are a few tea stalls and simple restaurants on the lakeshore. Combine with Wular Lake and Manasbal on a north Kashmir lakes day.
