The frozen falls
Ice formations in January and early February.
A waterfall near Tangmarg that freezes into ice columns in deep winter — one of the most photographed winter sights on the way to Gulmarg.
Drung is a village off the Tangmarg road below Gulmarg, where a stream falls over a rock face. In summer it is a pleasant forest waterfall. In the coldest weeks of winter it freezes into curtains and columns of ice, and visitors come to see it in hundreds.
The frozen falls became famous through social media in recent winters and are now a standard stop on a winter Gulmarg trip. Tea stalls and snack vendors set up in season.
The falls freeze reliably only in the coldest spells, usually January and early February. The approach can be icy — wear shoes with grip. Combine with Gulmarg on the same day.

In winter you can visit Srinagar, Gulmarg (snow and skiing), Sonamarg (now reachable through the Z-Morh tunnel) and Pahalgam, where Betaab Valley is the most likely of the side valleys to be open. Gurez, Zero Point, Sinthan Top, Bangus and the Mughal Road are closed by snow.
Yes, the Srinagar–Gulmarg road is kept open through winter, but heavy snowfall can close the Tangmarg–Gulmarg stretch for a few hours or a day, and after snow the authorities may allow only vehicles with snow chains or four-wheel drive. Keep a spare day in a winter itinerary.
