The shrine
Carved wood and pine forest — calm and atmospheric.
The 15th-century shrine of the Sufi saint Baba Payam-ud-Din Reshi, in pine forest below Gulmarg. A peaceful, much-loved place of pilgrimage for all faiths.
Baba Payam-ud-Din Reshi was a 15th-century courtier who renounced worldly life to become a disciple in the Rishi order of Kashmiri Sufism. He spent his later years meditating in the forest below Gulmarg, where his shrine now stands.
The shrine is a classic Kashmiri building with a carved wooden facade and tiered roof, set among tall pines. People of all faiths visit to pray, tie threads and make vows. The annual Urs draws large gatherings.
Dress modestly, cover your head and remove your shoes. It is a quiet half-hour stop on the drive between Tangmarg and Gulmarg, or a pony ride from Gulmarg.

Deluxe houseboat, shikara ride, candlelight dinner and cake across the four main valley stops.
Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and carry a scarf for women to cover the head at shrines. Bring a warm layer in every season, because Gulmarg and Sonamarg are cold once the sun goes in; in winter you need thermals, a down jacket, gloves and waterproof shoes.
Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours via Magam and Tangmarg. After heavy snow in winter the last stretch from Tangmarg can take much longer, or close for a few hours.
