The meadow
Rolling grassland as far as you can see, cut by streams.
A huge alpine meadow high in Kupwara, ringed by forest, opened to tourism only recently. One of the most beautiful and least-visited places in Kashmir.
Bangus is a high meadow complex in the Handwara area of Kupwara — a vast open bowl of grass and streams, ringed by forest and peaks. It is usually described as two parts, Bod Bangus (big) and Lokut Bangus (small).
For years it was off limits to tourists. Roads and basic facilities have been developed recently and it is now a growing destination for travellers who want space and silence. In summer, nomadic herders graze flocks across the meadow.
The last stretch of road can be rough. Accommodation is limited to camps and a few huts. Carry original ID; checkpoints are routine in this area. Ask us about current road conditions before planning.
