The caves
Natural openings in the limestone with local legends.
Natural limestone caves above the village of Kalaroos in Lolab, wrapped in local legends — including one that a tunnel here leads all the way to Russia.
The Kalaroos caves are natural caves in the hillside above Kalaroos village in the Lolab valley. Local tradition is full of stories about them, the best known being that a passage once led all the way to Russia — the name Kalaroos is sometimes linked to this legend.
Near the caves stands the Satbaran, a large carved stone with seven door-like openings, thought to be an ancient structure whose purpose is debated.
A short but steep walk leads from the village to the cave mouths. Take a torch and go with a local guide; do not go deep into the caves. Combine with the rest of Lolab.
