Patnitop sits on a forested ridge in Udhampur district, about 110 km from Jammu. The name is often traced to Patan da Talab, the pond of the princess. Pine and deodar forest, open meadows and views across the Chenab basin make it the most popular hill station in the Jammu region.
In winter, snow covers the meadows and families come for snow play. In summer it is a cool escape from the plains, with walks, horse rides and paragliding from nearby ridges.
The tunnel bypass
Since 2017 the Chenani–Nashri tunnel on the national highway bypasses Patnitop entirely. If you are driving from Jammu to Srinagar, you have to choose the old road over the ridge to visit. It adds time but is a beautiful drive.

How to reach
- From Jammu — about 110 km via Udhampur, around 3–4 hours. Take the old road, not the tunnel.

Visiting Patnitop
In winter you can visit Srinagar, Gulmarg (snow and skiing), Sonamarg (now reachable through the Z-Morh tunnel) and Pahalgam, where Betaab Valley is the most likely of the side valleys to be open. Gurez, Zero Point, Sinthan Top, Bangus and the Mughal Road are closed by snow.
