Palace ruins
The old seat of the Basohli rulers.
An old town above the Ravi in Kathua district, which gave its name to a bold school of Pahari miniature painting. Lake views over the Ranjit Sagar reservoir.
Basohli is a hill town above the Ravi river in Kathua district. In the 17th and 18th centuries its rulers patronised painters whose bold colours and strong lines created the Basohli style — one of the earliest schools of Pahari miniature painting. Examples are now in museums in India and abroad.
Ruins of the old palace remain on the hill. The Ranjit Sagar dam has created a large reservoir below the town, and the views across the water are a quiet pleasure.
The Atal Setu bridge over the Ravi is at Basohli.
