The main shrine
Rama’s temple with gold-leaf interiors.
A 19th-century complex of temples dedicated to Rama in the heart of Jammu, begun by Maharaja Gulab Singh and finished by Ranbir Singh. Gold-plated spires and thousands of shaligrams.
Raghunath Temple is the largest temple complex in Jammu, built between 1835 and 1860 by Maharaja Gulab Singh, founder of the Dogra state, and his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh. The main shrine is dedicated to Rama, with many smaller shrines to deities of the Hindu pantheon around it.
The inner walls of the main sanctum are covered in gold leaf, and the complex holds a large collection of shaligrams — sacred ammonite stones. A library of Sanskrit manuscripts was established alongside it.
Bags, phones and cameras are usually deposited before entry because of security. Allow an hour. It sits in the old city near Mubarak Mandi, so the two make a natural Jammu morning.
