Bawe Wali Mata temple
The goddess temple inside the fort.
An old fort on the left bank of the Tawi, home to the Bawe Wali Mata temple of the goddess Kali. Traditionally said to be founded by Raja Bahulochan; the present fort is Dogra.
Bahu Fort stands on a rocky outcrop above the Tawi river, on the opposite bank from the old city. Tradition credits its foundation to Raja Bahulochan, brother of the founder of Jammu, in ancient times; the structure you see was rebuilt and strengthened by the Dogra rulers.
Inside the walls is the temple of Bawe Wali Mata, a form of the goddess Kali and the presiding deity of Jammu. Tuesdays and Sundays draw large crowds of devotees, and the Navratri festivals are especially busy.
Allow an hour for the fort and temple, then walk down to the Bagh-e-Bahu gardens below.
