The gold throne
A solid gold royal throne on display.
A red sandstone palace built in the 1890s for Raja Amar Singh in the style of a French château, now a museum with Pahari miniatures and a famous gold throne.
Amar Mahal was built in the late 19th century for Raja Amar Singh, a prince of the Dogra house, and designed by a French architect — which is why a sandstone château with sloping roofs and turrets stands on a ridge above the Tawi.
It is now a museum run by a family trust. The collection includes Pahari miniature paintings, including Kangra and Basohli works, family portraits, a large library and a throne made of solid gold.
Allow an hour or so. Check opening days before you go — the museum keeps limited hours. The terrace gives a fine view of the Tawi valley.
