The ramparts
Views over the Chenab.
An 18th-century fort on the bank of the Chenab at Akhnoor, about 30 km from Jammu, near where Maharaja Gulab Singh was crowned. Protected by the ASI.
Akhnoor Fort stands on the right bank of the Chenab at Akhnoor, about 30 km north-west of Jammu. It was built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and is a two-storey fortress with bastions overlooking the river. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Close by is the Jia Pota ghat, where Gulab Singh was crowned Raja of Jammu in 1822 — the event that founded Dogra rule. Nearby, at Manda, archaeologists found the northernmost known site of the Harappan civilisation.
The fort and the riverside make a pleasant half-day from Jammu, best in the cooler months.
