The shrine
Rebuilt in traditional Kashmiri style on the hilltop.
The shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani — Nund Rishi, the patron saint of Kashmir — in the hill town of Charar-e-Sharief, on the road to Yusmarg.
Charar-e-Sharief is a hill town in Budgam and the resting place of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani, known as Nund Rishi or Alamdar-e-Kashmir — the patron saint of the valley, revered by both Muslims and Hindus. His verses in Kashmiri are still recited across the valley.
The original wooden shrine, centuries old, was destroyed by fire in 1995 and has since been rebuilt in the traditional style. It remains one of the most visited shrines in Kashmir, especially during the saint’s Urs.
Dress modestly, cover your head and remove shoes. The town is on the road to Yusmarg, so a stop fits naturally into that day.
