The shrine and dome

Kashmir’s holiest Muslim shrine, a white marble mosque with a single dome on the north-west shore of Dal Lake. It houses a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad.
Hazratbal stands on the north-western shore of Dal Lake, its white marble dome reflected in the water. It is the most revered Muslim shrine in Kashmir, holding the Moi-e-Muqaddas — a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad, brought to Kashmir in the 17th century.
The present building was completed in 1979 and is the only domed mosque of its kind in Srinagar, where the traditional style is the pagoda-like wooden roof. The relic is shown to the public only on major religious occasions, when the shrine and its lawns fill with tens of thousands of people.
Visitors of all faiths may walk the grounds and lakeside promenade. Dress modestly — long sleeves and covered legs — and women should carry a scarf to cover their hair. Shoes come off before entering the mosque. Women are generally not allowed into the inner sanctum; there is a separate area for them. Avoid Friday midday prayers if you are sightseeing.
The promenade along the water is a good place to sit at sunset, and the stalls outside sell the famous local snacks. Pigeons gather on the lawns in hundreds.

Calm, local and away from the Boulevard crowds.
All year. Mornings are quiet; sunset on the promenade is the most atmospheric. Expect very large crowds on religious occasions.
