Houseboat stay
Carved walnut-wood houseboats moored along the willow-lined banks.
A deeper, calmer lake connected to Dal at its north-western end, ringed by willows and poplars. Fewer shikaras, quieter houseboats, and clear evening reflections.
Nigeen Lake lies at the north-western end of the Dal system, linked to Dal by a narrow channel under a bridge. Locals call it the jewel in the ring. It is smaller and deeper than Dal, and the water is often clearer, with willow and poplar trees along the banks and the Hari Parbat fort above.
The difference from Dal is noise. There is no Boulevard road along the shore and far less hawker traffic on the water, so the houseboats here are favoured by travellers who want the houseboat experience without the bustle. You still get shikaras, morning flower sellers and sunsets over the water.
For a first trip, Dal Lake puts you in the middle of things — the floating market, the Boulevard, quick access to the gardens. For a honeymoon or a second visit, Nigeen is the better night’s sleep. Both are within 20 minutes of each other by road, and a shikara can take you from one to the other.
Houseboat quality varies more than the brochures suggest. We inspect the boats we book; ask us for photos of the actual room before you confirm.

Kashmir is beautiful all year round. Spring (March–May) is ideal for tulip gardens and blossoming orchards. Summer (June–August) offers lush green valleys perfect for sightseeing. Autumn (September–November) brings stunning golden foliage. Winter (December–February) is magical for snowfall and skiing in Gulmarg.
Srinagar airport is about 12–14 km from Dal Lake, a 30 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic. A prepaid taxi counter operates at the airport, and package travellers are usually met at arrivals by their driver.
