The bridge at sunset
Wooden trusses, the river and the hills beyond.
A restored wooden pedestrian bridge across the Jhelum between Rajbagh and Sonwar. A pleasant evening walk with river views and cafés along the Bund.
Zero Bridge crosses the Jhelum between Rajbagh and Sonwar, a short walk from the Bund and Lal Chowk. The original timber bridge was built in the mid-20th century; it fell out of use and was restored as a pedestrian bridge, with the old wooden trusses kept as a heritage feature.
The name is usually explained as being upstream of the numbered bridges of the old city — Amira Kadal is the first, so this one became zero. Whatever the origin, it is now a favourite evening spot for Srinagar families, with river views and houseboats moored along the Jhelum banks.
This is a twenty-minute stop rather than an outing. Walk the Bund, cross the bridge at sunset, then find dinner in Rajbagh or on the Boulevard. It pairs well with an afternoon at the SPS Museum nearby.
