The facade
Carved wood, latticework and the tiered roof above the river.
One of the oldest Muslim shrines in Kashmir, on the bank of the Jhelum in the old city. A wooden building with a tiered roof and an interior covered in painted papier-mâché.
Khanqah-e-Moula, also called the Shah-e-Hamdan mosque, stands on the right bank of the Jhelum near Fateh Kadal. It was first built in 1395 by Sultan Sikandar in memory of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, the Persian Sufi scholar credited with spreading Islam in Kashmir. After fires, it was rebuilt in the 18th century.
It is one of the finest examples of Kashmiri wooden architecture: a square timber hall with a tiered pyramidal roof and a slender spire. Inside, walls and ceilings are covered in painted papier-mâché and carved wood panels in deep reds, greens and gold.
Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome to view the shrine, but are usually not permitted inside the main hall; women typically view from the outer area. The exterior and the riverside setting are worth the visit regardless. Dress modestly and avoid prayer times.
Pathar Masjid stands almost opposite on the other bank — the two are always seen together on an old-city walk.
Carved wood, latticework and the tiered roof above the river.
Visible from the doorways — the finest of Kashmir’s craft tradition.
Year round, outside prayer times.

Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and carry a scarf for women to cover the head at shrines. Bring a warm layer in every season, because Gulmarg and Sonamarg are cold once the sun goes in; in winter you need thermals, a down jacket, gloves and waterproof shoes.
