The black pavilion
The stone pavilion on the top terrace, built under Shah Jahan, standing in a tank of fountains. The best-preserved Mughal structure in the garden.
The largest of Srinagar’s Mughal gardens, laid out by Emperor Jahangir in 1619 on the far shore of Dal Lake. Three terraces, a central water channel and chinar trees that turn red in autumn.
Shalimar Bagh sits at the north-eastern end of Dal Lake, where the Zabarwan hills come down to the water. Emperor Jahangir laid it out in 1619 for his wife Nur Jahan, and it is the garden most people mean when they say “the Mughal gardens of Kashmir”.
The design is a long central channel, the Shah Nahar, running down through three terraces. Each level was once more private than the last: the lowest was the public garden, the middle the emperor’s, and the top terrace — with its black-stone pavilion surrounded by fountains — was reserved for the women of the court.
Plan an hour. The garden is flat and easy to walk, with benches under the chinars. Spring brings the flower beds into colour and the fountains are usually running; late October is the other great month, when the chinars turn copper and the crowds thin out. Winter visits are quiet and grey, but the garden is open.
Shalimar is almost always done together with Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi — they sit along the same Boulevard road. Doing all three plus Pari Mahal makes a comfortable half day from your hotel or houseboat in Srinagar.

Old chinar trees line the channel. In late October and early November they turn deep red — the best photographs of the year.
The central water course with its cascades between terraces. It is what makes a Mughal garden a Mughal garden.
April to early June for flowers and running fountains; late October for chinar colour. Open year round, usually from morning until sunset. A small entry ticket is sold at the gate.

Kashmir is beautiful all year round. Spring (March–May) is ideal for tulip gardens and blossoming orchards. Summer (June–August) offers lush green valleys perfect for sightseeing. Autumn (September–November) brings stunning golden foliage. Winter (December–February) is magical for snowfall and skiing in Gulmarg.
Five to six nights is right for a first trip to Kashmir: enough for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam at a comfortable pace, a houseboat night and a spare half-day for weather. Four nights is the minimum and feels rushed.
