Historic shawls showing what the finest Kashmiri weaving looks like.
The Sri Pratap Singh Museum, founded in 1898 near Lal Mandi — shawls, papier-mâché, Gandharan sculpture, coins and arms. The best rainy-day stop in Srinagar.
The Sri Pratap Singh Museum was founded in 1898 by Maharaja Pratap Singh and is the state museum of Kashmir. It moved into a modern building in Lal Mandi beside the Jhelum, alongside the original palace building.
The collection covers Kashmir’s history and crafts: Kani and Pashmina shawls, papier-mâché, carved walnut wood and copperware; Hindu and Buddhist stone sculpture, including pieces from Harwan and other excavated sites; coins, manuscripts, arms and armour; and natural history displays.
Allow one to two hours. It is the best indoor option on a wet day, and a useful primer before you go shawl or carpet shopping — you will know what real handwork looks like. Check the timings before you go; government museums commonly close one day a week and on public holidays.
