The domed tomb
Brick construction with five domes — rare in Kashmir.
The domed brick tomb built by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin — Budshah, the Great King — for his mother, in the old city near Zaina Kadal. The Sultan himself lies in the graveyard beside it.
The Badshah or Budshah Tomb stands near Zaina Kadal in the old city of Srinagar. It was built in the 15th century by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin — remembered by Kashmiris as Budshah, the Great King — for his mother. The Sultan himself is buried in the enclosure beside it.
It is an unusual building for Kashmir: brick rather than wood, with five domes in a style that shows Persian and Central Asian influence. It sits on the foundations of an older stone temple, and carved stone from that earlier structure is visible in the enclosure walls.
Zain-ul-Abidin is the most admired ruler in Kashmir’s history, credited with religious tolerance and with bringing the crafts — papier-mâché, carpet weaving, shawl work — that the valley is still known for. His tomb is modest but significant, and fits naturally into an old-city walk.
Combine with Pathar Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula and Jamia Masjid.
