The arched facade
Nine stone arches in Mughal style facing the river.
A grey limestone mosque built by Empress Nur Jahan in 1623 on the left bank of the Jhelum — a rare Mughal stone building in a city of wooden shrines.
Pathar Masjid — the Stone Mosque — was commissioned by Empress Nur Jahan in 1623. It stands on the left bank of the Jhelum in Zaina Kadal, almost opposite Khanqah-e-Moula, and is one of the few Mughal monuments in Srinagar built of stone rather than wood.
The facade is a row of nine arches in polished grey limestone, with fluted pillars and a flat roof — pure Mughal style, quite different from the pagoda roofs of Kashmiri shrines around it. It is a protected monument and has been restored in recent years.
It takes fifteen minutes to see properly. Include it on a walk with Khanqah-e-Moula across the river and Badshah Tomb nearby. Dress modestly.
