The first half follows the national highway south through Pampore — famous for saffron and its roadside kahwa stalls — and Awantipora, where the ruins of 9th-century temples stand beside the road. From Anantnag the Pahalgam road follows the Lidder river up a narrowing valley.
Your taxi takes you to Pahalgam town. Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari beyond it are served only by the Pahalgam taxi union, paid locally at fixed rates.
As a day trip this is a long one: around six hours of driving in total. Many travellers prefer a night in Pahalgam and do Betaab and Aru the next morning before driving back.
