The road follows the Sindh river from Ganderbal through Kangan and Gund, the valley narrowing and the mountains rising as you go. The last stretch into Sonamarg opens onto the wide meadow with the Thajiwas peaks behind.
At Sonamarg, ponies to Thajiwas Glacier are hired from the local union. Zero Point beyond the Zojila is reached only by local taxi, not your Srinagar car, and the pass is closed in winter.
Since the Z-Morh tunnel opened, Sonamarg is reachable for much more of the winter than before, though heavy snowfall can still close the road for a day or two.
