The route passes the hill town of Charar-e-Sharief, resting place of Kashmir’s patron saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din — a worthwhile stop on the way up. Beyond it the road climbs into forest and opens onto the Yusmarg meadow.
From Yusmarg, Nilnag Lake is about 4 km on foot or by pony, and Sang-e-Safed further up the valley. Pony rates are fixed by the local union.
